Hi I just bought a 1993 Toyota Corolla, with an aftermarket JVC radio in it, and we cant get the radio to work. The display dont work nor does the sound, there is not a buzzing sound coming from the speakers or anything. Any suggestions? We have tried a different radio and nothing works...Thanks.

Start with the wiring harness where you assume you get power from, and work your way back to where it should be fused. This is first and foremost basic diagnostics.

No 12v = no radio.

Find the wiring diagram for your vehicle in the12v.com database and print out the schema so you know what color wire goes to what.

Find that harness under the dash and work your way back through the fuse.

You need a simple VM for this.

If you suspect the radio is defunct, pop the hood and wire it (fused) straight to the battery terminals.

Have you checked the radio fuse in the fuse panel? If not that should be the first thing to check.

OK I will try the tip from anonymous, and yes we have checked the fuses, and replaced them just to be sure, we also replaced the one behind the radio. Everything works fine but the radio and well the clock, it doesnt work either..

Actually there are three fuses to check/replace:

The car itself has a 20 amp fuse labeled, "Cig & Radio" which provides a switched 12 volts through the integration relay to the gray wire of the car's stock radio harness.

The car also has a 20 amp fuse labeled, "Dome"  which provides a constant 12 volts through the integration relay also to the blue-yellow wire of the car's stock radio harness.

Naturally, the radio itself has a fuse on the back of it.

The car's original radio harness should have a brown wire going to frame ground on the instrument panel left hand brace according to the schematic.

That actually lead to the problem...there wasnt enough power going to the radio, but now only 2 of the speakers will work, the 2 on the drivers side dont work...any suggestions?

Could be a wire or wires broken inside the rubber boots in the door jambs going to the speakers. Could also be a bad channel in your radio or wiring harness problems coming out of the radio.

Also check the front speakers themselves by temporarily hooking them up to a different sound source or to an ohm meter.
