true it can be the sub. so take a old common house plug and wire and wire it to the speakers pos/neg post and plug it in the wall lol just playing. but in all seriousness if the speaker is blown the cone will be loose and you will hear a scratching noise out of it. with the speaker off gently push the centerof the cone done and if its stiff ur sub is good if its loose you got a burnt coil . seeing on how your sub is dvc one of the coils could be bad and that could be the reason why your amps going into protection mode ... post your results

For safety reasons, DO NOT PLUG YOUR SPEAKER INTO A WALL OUTLET

Okay, so my new r's are making a clacking noise of sorts when a certain frequency of bass hits, midrange, like 30-40 hz. My old subs, my 2 treos did the same thing. could this be my amp being bad? Like, the amp gets uber hot, so hot you cant put ur hand on it, just under normal conditions. If it is my amp, I am willing to buy another one. What would yall recommend for around $250, $300 at the absolute most? I am thinking that there cant be anything wrong with the subs, cuz for 1, theyre brand new, and 2, they are being underpowered 100 watts each, and the amps not clipping. So, idk what else it could be other than the amp is no good. Btw, i was looking at a hifonics hfi2000d. This amp any good?
