found the wire that the switch takes to ground when it's pushed. I wired the remote starter defrost output(-) to it. It doesn't work, neither does pushing the button while the car is remote started. When i turn the key to ACC, i can hear the relay energizing when i push the button.
Does something in the defrost circuit have to be energized for this to work?

Sounds like you need to energize another Accessory wire in the ignition harness with the remote start. Without looking at a chart, I'm thinking either WHITE/ black or yellow wire.
I had a 97 Integra about 10 years ago. I do remember having hooked up the rear defrost to my remote start. Also controlled the moonroof through the remote. It was a fun car to drive.

the yellow is for Accessory 1, but there's no mention of an Accessory 2. I don't have any wiring diagrams for the car.

this is how i have it wired.
H3/1 IGN 1
H3/2 not used
H3/3 ACC 1
H3/4 STR
H3/5 12+
H3/6 not used
H3/7 not used
H3/8 12+
should the flex relay inputs be used for defrost to work?

turn the key to the on position and test to see which wire has voltage and make sure that your remote starter is connected to the correct wires

In the harness you listed above the red, RED / white and RED / black all need to go to constant 12v

its a 5301 btw.
so, H3/2 RED / white, fused IGN 2/flex relay input should be 12+? but i don't have IGN2 hooked up. Just IGN1 and ACC1 and both are supplying 12+ when remote started.

i found the WHT/BLK wire from the ignition switch that goes to 12+, but it only powers the radio/cigarette lighter.
i think my problem has to do with the Intigrated Control Unit that controls the defrost relay and timer via controlling its ground.
