Okay, in the past, if you bought the viper 791xv and took the antenna + remote, you could use it with any other DEI unit with the same antenna plug; in my case: the Avital 4300 (security + remote start unit).
Why? Because the brain's internals were exactly the same. Just the case is different. All you had to do was match the frequency of the remote to the antenna, then program it to the brain.
----------
Today, i am trying to take the Viper Venom SST (160xvl) antenna + remote to use with my Avital brain; however it will not program .
The viper 160xvl brain looks exactly like the Avital 4200 (keyless + remote start equivalence).
So in theory, this should still work. The programming instructions are the same, the wiring and layout is the same. But it just won't program! [Programming mode for new remote is not locked.]
Just can't figure out why taking the antenna + remote and swapping it to a different brain won't work.
Anyone ever try this before? Or at least know why it is not working?
Thanks in advanced for any insight.

I believe your issue is that the new remote is an SST type. I have a Clifford Matrix RS2.1 which is basically the Clifford version of your 4300. I could only use the antenna & remote from a RSX3.5 which isnt SST. The Clifford SST remote & antenna wouldn't program for me either. I'm not sure why. And when I called DEI they said it's not compatible.

Yup that's correct the new sst remotes won't work on the older generation systems.  tried it a dozen times on every unit i know.
