I'm trying to find a very basic remote start for an industrial application. It needs 2 auxilliary channels, an instant kill [the brake wire input is fine, I can just diode it] as well as an instant start start trigger input. It really doesn't matter if it comes with keyless entry, though I've been looking at using lock/unlock as auxilliary channels rather than for their intended use. I've been searching the brands that I normally use [audiovox & DEI], but I'm not really satisfied w/ the products they have. The remote starts also need to be diesel compatible. Other than that they just need to be reliable and [if I'm not asking to much] cheap as possible, but reliable is more important. They will be used in fleet vehicles in different regions of the country, so I really can't afford to be traveling around doing warranty work from Anchorage to Orlando & everywhere in between. The main brands I'm looking at right now are Prestige, Code Alarm & AutoStart but if anyone can suggest a different brand to meet my customers' needs I'm all ears. Thanks - &E [Andy]

Ohh and the only vehicles these remote starts will be used in are 06' & newer Ford, Chevy & Dodge 1/2, 3/4 & 1 ton pick-ups, Thanks again - &E

I would definitely use a DEI product. Remote start on diesel is very good, door lock channels can be used for different applications or trunk output. Neutral safety switch input/brake/hood can be used for your shutdown purpose. For durability, DEI is my # one choice. It may not be the cheapest one but it will be hard to answer both request..price/durability. Also, any DEI product installed by a DEI certified tech is lifetime warrantied on the main module. For a price point unit, look at the Avital 4103. I've been installing the Viper version for 2 years now and I have 0% come back on over 800 units installed. This is my opinion of course.

Try a Compustar CS600S good keyless/start unit. Cheap and very reliable.

I don't know much about the Compustars, heard of them never installed one. Thanks for the input Rochon, as far as technology Directed alarms are more advanced than anyone else hands down, but I've had terrible luck with them from a reliability standpoint. Just this Friday I was finishing up putting a Clifford 590.2x into a 2010 F-150. All I had to do was program the PKFM, tested it over a dozen times no problems [other than factory alarm disarm jury-rig they show on xpresskit.com did nothing other than turn on all his gauges and his factory screen when I hit the unlock button; if your putting a RS in a 2010 ford don't bother w/ that waste of time]. Anyways I adjusted the resistance on his 530t's [window rollup/roll down] and installed a proximity sensor. Lastly I was cleaning up the wiring around the alarm brain, I unplugged the primary 12 pin harness (h1) briefly to rearrange some wires, after I plugged it back the starter output wire went dead, I could start the truck w/ my power probe III, but I got no pulse out of the Clifford, and my customer bought the unit off of e-bay so he's pretty much SOL now, but that's what you get when you cheap out buying stuff online.

The Compustar CS600 is a nice unit. Very reliable and the price is good. However, while it is Diesel compatable and has both (+) and (-) trigger start, it does not have any AUX outputs. ( It does have keyless, trunk and priority drivers door lock outputs.)

Haven't done any new F150's with the factory alarm...

I'm sorry to ear that you've been having trouble with the DEI products. I've been installing them for 18 years and except for the range problem they were having in the 1990's, I always got satisfaction with them. All my customers are happy with the product. I agree that the Compustar is also a great product, I've been installing them for 9 years now and except for some few issues, I have no bad things to say about them. My wife had the 2 way, 900MHz unit in her car since 2004 and I changes it for a 4702V 3 months ago for no particular reason, just wanted to change it. The Compustar has less channels but I like the fact that it's got negative ignition/starter/accessory. One thing that I don't like is the size of the wires, they're quit easy to pull them out of their plugs. Be careful with that.

I appreciate the input. At the moment I think I'm going with Prestige, either the APS687C or APS997N depending on features/cost. I've always had good luck with Prestige from a reliability standpoint, but if anyone has a good reason I shouldn't use them please let me know. Thanks, &E

Great choice on the prestige units. I sell them exclusively. For just a start keyless the 687c is awsome the 997 has alarm plus its a 2way. you cant go wrong with them

I like the 997s, installed quite a few, but security is not an issue, so the two way/alarm isn't necessary. These are going to be installed in commercial fleet vehicles, most have manual locks, but I'd rather use the 687 vs a 3 button remote so i at least have the option of hooking up power door locks if they are present.
