I bought a Viper 5701 from a dealer on eBay, paid a local installer to put it into my 1997 Ford Explorer XLT, and it doesn't work. The installer refuses to touch it, which is another matter I'm dealing with. But, I don't believe they properly installed it, and here's why:
+It has a starter kill, but when the alarm is actually armed and/or going off, I can start the vehicle.
+If I disarm the system, and the alarm went off while I was away, it chirps 4 times. It's supposed to reset when I start the car, and it doesn't.
+The remote start works, but will NOT stop attempting to engage the starter once the vehicle is started.
I believe that the alarm module doesn't know that the vehicle is running, either because of a bad wire or an improperly connected wire. I'm curious what I should check, and what I can try.
Help!!

Starter kill is an optional feature - check to make sure it is hooked up. I believe on that model it is an internal relay, but check the documentation.
The system needs to see voltage on the ignition input to reset - make sure ignition input (typically yellow) is connected to a wire that goes to 12vdc when the ignition is turned on.
The remote start has two ways to determine of the car is running - voltage sense or tach. Tach reference is the best and most accurate way to monitor engine speed. The tach wire is typically PURPLE / white and should be connected to a tach signal in the vehicle. Once the tach wire is connected to a valid tach source it must be learned by the system and then the system may need to be programmed to use a tach reference.

There is something wrong with the ignition wire on the remote start. That would cause problems starting and is the only way the alarm wouldn't reset once you use the key to start it.

I just tried it again to see whats up, and now it doesn't crank long enough. I haven't changed any settings, as I don't have access to a bitwriter, but I'm not sure what the issue is. I know they ran a tach sense wire, and it shows 4 volts when the key is off, 5 when cranking and 6 when the engine is running.
Also, anybody have an idea where the ignition sense wire should go? It goes to a 12v source that is on whenever the key is on at the moment. According to the paperwork provided by the manufacturer for my vehicle, it is connected to the right wire.

I just disconnected the starter sense wire, turned my ignition to the 'run' position with my key, and pressed the remote start button. Worked perfectly, 8 times in a row. When I reconnect the ignition sense wire, it engages the starter. So how do I bypass the ignition sense wire (since it's obviously the tach sense wire informing the system to stop cranking)? Anyone?
I'm forever indebted!
