i have an older  rockford  p1000.1bd amp and one 10" alpine type r sub it is wired in series is that the right way to have it?

Doesnt look like it.  I assume you have the 4 ohm DVC type R.  If that is the case you should have it parralleled.  that will give u 500w.  series will give you about 125w. 

if u have the 2ohm dvc, series will give u 225w, and parrallel will give u 1,000w.

If your cousin is such a good installer, and he will install anything for a 6 pack; why are you talking to me?
