New to the scene . About to start installing 2 alpine amps in my Grand Marquis .. local shop says I need 2 (8ga) power cords from the battery to run both . Is that true ?

Generally (very) speaking, yes, or run one 4 gauge to a distribution block and separate it from there to 2-8 guage wires.
If we know what amps and what load they'll be running at we can get a better idea.
This site also has calculators for wire size based on power.
