Well I actualy went to the Installer Institute in Fl. and I loved it. the teachers were great and the info givin was very helpfull. I had 6 years expearince as an installer before going and I feel like I still learned a ton. you also get a tour of the Metra facility and you get to watch them make dash kits and wire harness, cool stuff.

But no school will ever prepare you for what you will encounter in the work palace. A school will only give you the basics of electronics and teach you the process in which things get done.  Auex is probably the most correct because theres nothing like haveing 10 cars lined up each getting somthing different and they all have to be done today. School can not prepare you for that. :)

MECP Cert.
18 years Exp.

the best way to learn is to have a person who has been in the field for a long time teach you, then go to school to learn a lot more of the techinical aspects........I hired a guy that came from Mobile D and the first car I gave him was a 1996 neon for a deck.........3 hours later I think he figured out on how do the deck

you also need to be mechanically inclined if your not then it's going to be real hard.

If you want to be MECP certified, buy the books, study, test yourself, once you feel confident you can answer the questions the way they want you to, set up the test and take it

most employers look at experience first and MECP as a plus, but by the same token some may look at your MECP certification as good inititive to learn the trade the way they want the work to be done

I was lucky and landed my first install job through a friend, and got to work with three 10 year veterns of the buisness.  Then after a short period of time bought the mecp study guides, studied, and took the first test.  Now I'm working on the 2nd level test.

If you haven't already done so, check out MECP.com
