Micro motorization

My new project: I want to have a small alarm keypad motor out of the map pocket under my HU. I figure a typical actuator is overkill, so I'm thinking of using the motor and gear system out of either a cdrom drive, or an old kenwood HU with a face that slides out. Any suggestions?

get an old cd player and take it apart. i have one that i took apart that i am going to use for something similar and it is great. very smooth action.

That sounds pretty cool. I would think that a small motor would also be availible from any electronic wholesaler as well. What kinda vehicle is this in and how much depth is behind the pocket you plan on using. If it works out you should post pictures. For a 96 Integra. Very little clearance, after looking at it a little further, the main issues are going to be creating a small drawer type setup, and mounting small switches as sensors to shut the motor when fully extended.

You can use the the cd mech parts, but they are not meant to take much of a load.  Check some of the robotics kits usually found in hobby shops, servo motors from RC kits, broken toys have useful stuff (Radio shack).  dig deep into the closet and find your old mechno set.  Some electronic surplus stores will have motors, pullies, gear boxes to use.

I've done a similar application using the motor/drive system from an old Polaroid camera.  It has a good little DC motor and two pinch rollers which can easily be wired to eject and retract.  I connected a keypad to a thin flat piece of metal (about 1" wide and 5" long), and that is what the film ejection pinch rollers "delivered" the keypad with.

Grab an old home tray-loading CD player, or a tray loading CD-ROM drive and cannabilize it. How much space do you actually have? I know the bezel space is skinny, but I thought there was more room towards the back? -daveThis is not a sig. This is a duck. Quack.
