Ahhh, the wood's there to keep the rad hose happy :-). Gotta hand it to old VW drivers... they can bandaid almost anything. The piece you need is the Autostart T-Gen 100. It straps to the alternator (literally) and generates a decent AC tach signal. If the guys in Montreal are out of stock, the Visions here has one they're sitting on, I can probably snag it for you. Astroflex has a similar piece as well. Lemme know!

Yah, that wood is the new VW anti vibration device designed & tested to reduce alternator vibrations by more than half !! If you need one they're cheap ........ as it's only in the developement stages. Needed: Tach Generator or Boost Module - Page 3 - Last Post -- posted image.
