im thinking about just buying a cheap remote start only system untill i can afford one of the 2way clifford systems. the wiring chart for my 97 cheve cavalier says my car has 3 ign wires. the cheap remote start system only has 2 ign wire slots. will it work? and what is the diff between the different ignition wires? i know that its pittiful but ive got to learn so how.

there is no difference between the 2 ign outputs on the remote start module. and all you need to add a third one is a relay. most remote start modules have an optional accessory wire that can be programmed to act as an ignition. if not use a relay. the difference between the ignition and accessory wires is that the ignition wires control critical functions of the car, Ie. the fuel pump, and will be on while key is on and while engine is cranking. the accessory wires, Ie. the radio, a/c, will be on while key is on but off while cranking. To create a third ignition wire use a SPDT relay 30amp.

85 - ground

86 - tap into one of the Ignition wires on the Remote start.

30 - Tap a 12 gauge wire directly from the battery.

87 - your 3rd ignition wire

87a - leave open.

If you do it the way stated above, that relay will activate everytime the car is started, whether it be with the key or with the remote start. It will also stay on the entire time you are driving. While not a huge deal, the correct way is to use 2 relays and wire as follows:

85: To (+) Ign output on R/S

86: To ground

30: To (+) 12v fused

87: To Ign 1 in car

87a: No Connection

85: To (+) Ign output on R/S

86: To ground

30: To (+) 12v fused

87: To Ign 2 in car

87a: No Connection

not like it matters if the relay is on the entire time you are driving, because there are several factory relays that are on the entire time the car is driving. and aside from that, if you do it mikes way, you're making ing1 & ign2 wires that you already have, which is pointless, and those will be on while you are driving as well. the electricity will hop back into the ign wires of the remote start and both of his relays will be on.

If you wish to isolate the relay so it is only on during remote start only, you can add a 6 amp diode onto the remote start wire that you tapped into. put it on the remote start ign 2 output right after you tap into it for your 3rd ignition relay. fase the cathode side of the diode toward the factory ign wire.

Another thing to consider is that you may disable a feature of the remote starter when adding relays. For example, the "Quick Stop" option on some units looks for +12V on the IGN1 wire before it will allow the unit to switch on. By adding 2 relays to the IGN1, the unit will not see any voltage while the car is running from the key. One solution is to use IGN2 for adding the relays, rather than IGN1. Another would be to see if the RS has another output which can be used to switch the third IGN relay.
