Return of the Steel Box

Well I went ahead and did it. This box is made of 3/8" steel, welded tight. I loaded in my IDQ10 because it's what I'm used to lisening to, and by ear is the only kind of testing I can do. During play it's actually quite solid. It was very boomy but clean sounding, as if somebody in the next car over had a couple of  W7's going. I attribute this to the excess airspace that it has for now (see below). Anybody familiar with Image Dynamics can see that this is way too much air space for a 10". The box is roughly 12"x12"x12". So needless to say, I kept the levels down. I plan to spray in some rubberized undercoating, then add in a layer of either 1/2" or 1" SoundRite (a low density soundproof sheeting) and spray it up tight again with the undercoating.

O.k, let's see if it works this time. If you can or can't see the picture let me know - this is my first time trying to post a pic., doesn't seem to be working.

Edit:  Oh Yeah! The box also wheighs 87.5 lbs. without the driver! Add a 20 lb. sub and try to gently ease it into the back seat of and ext. cab chev. hehehe.

I used the 3/8" steel because it is what was available to me, and I just wanted to know how a steel box would sound. I had posted a question about it a while ago before I built it. It seemed like nobody really had ever seen or heard one, so now here one is. I would like to try aluminum for the weight factor, as well as the fact that it is a softer, and therfore more sonically dead material. But I have access to "scraps" at work for free, and we really only use steel or stainless steel there, so that's the story on that.

This isn't going to be used regularly, as it is way too heavy. I'm only kind of testing the idea of using steel for an enclosure.  Maybe I'll just hook it up to the garage stereo when the vehicle testing is over. Hmmm....

What kind of gun are you talking about? Like firearm bang-bang gun? Do you realize how solid 3/8" steel is? I wouldn't dare shoot my .280 Remington at it, from dead on anyways.
