Key board disable during motion

is there a way to over ride the function that disables the key board when the truck is moving on a 2004 Dodge Ram?

2004 Dodge Ram with a factory navigation system. It operates on Harman Becker software. The model of radio -- I'm not sure, of maybe a Alpine brand. But when entering location or cities you will have access to a keyboard but only if the truck is stopped. I would like to over ride this to allow operation during motion.

OK, to over ride that all you would have to do is disconnect the speed sense wire from the navigation. Of course if you do then the nav won't work. There is nothing you can do.

Would it be possible to install a momentary sw in the VSS line that can be pushed for keyboard use than released when finished? would this cause a problem?

Can you tell me what the VSS is for? It seems the nav sys would not need a VSS to for motion detection. Is there another use or need for the speed sensor?

Well, VSS is required. Man I really need to find a good online definition for "dead reckoning". Ok basically this is the way a nav works. When you power the unit up, it will use the gps antenna to acquire the vehicles position, hell techinically you can take the antenna out of the car after this. After that it switches to "dead reckoning" which means that it will start using the VSS(vehicle speed sensor), reverse light, and a gyro to tell you where you are(when you move around). Disconnecting the VSS wire would basicaly make the nav think that the vehicle never moves from the spot it was disconnected.

Dead reackoning just means odometry based navigation. basically that the vehicle will use the speed duration and angle changes to determine the new location of the vehicle through mathmatics.

Therefore, as auex stated without the speed sensor the computer cannot determine the speed for a certain duration so the navigation will be wrong. if the unit is all one piece there really isnt much you can do short of opening it and trying to reverse engineer the thing...
