Carnauba wax worked well for me (paste form).

I used this for a couple of reverse molds. I made a mold of the HUD switch opening on an original dash trim piece and used it to make one in another that was not equipped with the opening. Info on that is floating around this forum somewhere. I also used it when I was experimenting with raised/sunken lettering in vinyl door panels. This was one of the test "plates" (L67 is my engine RPO code if you are wondering)

I have been using TR mold release wax - good stuff you should put 3 coats on mold unless the mold is new and then do 5 coats

So torkey you've actually tried the petroleum jelly before.  How did you get it off your work piece, or did you just leave it??   I never thought about using that, that would be so much cheaper than wd-40 or anykind of wax.   But the question is how do you get anything to stick to it after that, like paint or glue for carpet?????
