I know this is going to be a very general question, and im sure if i searched more i could probably find an answer to this, but i really am lost. I dont know what is what when it comes to alarms, and i dont know what companies are better and which are worse. I am looking to purchase and alarm for my 88 cherokee. No power windows, no power locks. I have called around and it seems most shops prefer one brand and they try to persuade me to come down and buy that one. I would like to have a little more knowledge before i go and get pressured by some moron salesman. Im looking for and alarm, hopefully under $500 that will give my jeep good protection. I honestly have no idea where to start, and im just looking for suggestions on popular alarms in my price range. Thanks alot.

One other point that I must mention is make sure that whatever you end up buying, you have someone to install it for you at a reasonable price. If you end up buying over the internet, your going to have to install it yourself or have a shop install it. MOst of the time, shops will inflate their prices because they do not want to install something that is not familiar to them and takes more time to install in the end ( which costs you more money ). If you stick with Compustart, DEI or Audiovox systems from a shop installed system, your not going to be upset. If you end up on eBay buying stuff up, then your going to have some problems with installation and warranty as well if needed.

I agree.  DEI has been making alarms for years and they now carry and make many different brands and models.  I've had 4 alarms in 4 different cars and always used DEI products (both security and audio) and have been very pleased.

About the installation, I highly recommend you buying from a shop that sells the alarm "installed".  The price has both the alarm and installation built in.  And in your case, it would be a very simple alarm setup.  Since you don't have power door locks, there would be even fewer wires to hook up.  One thing you also want to consider is what type of sensor(s) you want.  Shock sensors are obviously the most popular and are the least troublesome in most cases.  There are other sensors like glass breaking and radar, but my limited experience with the radar sensors have always been headaches.  Also, make sure when whomever installs your alarm that they put a starter kill if the alarm doesn't already do it.  Some shops I've heard about in the past would install an alarm but didn't hook up the starter kill relay even though it was a function of the alarm.  Beyond that most shops should be able to answer most questions that you have.
