1982 Firebird, alarm advice

I want to hook up an alarm into my 1982 Firebird. The options I want besides the alarm itselft, is keyless entry and proximity sensor. I went to a local stero shop and they seemed to recommend the Viper 3101V with the addition of a DEI proximity sensor. Is this a good system? Other recommendations? They gave me a quote of $404 installed.

I found this same alarm online for $149 and the proximity sensor for around $40.

How hard would this to be to hook up myself? What is really involoved? My only install experience was when my dad and I put a remote start/keyless system in an old Bonneville I had. I have done many heaunit, amplifier, and speaker installs however from what I understand installing an alarm might be a whole new ball game.   

You can do it.  Have some confidence.  Installing alarms and remote start systems is really a no brainer on older cars.  It does get more complicated on newer cars, but on an '82, I'd say go ahead.  If you get the wiring diagrams and take the time to find and test all your wires, it's really a cake walk.  Keep in mind, it's MUCH cheaper if you install it yourself too!

If you want a challenge, try troubleshooting a 8 way processor SQL database cluster server running Window 2000 Advanced server software that is a live site for AT&T wireless in Seattle, WA via a remote KVM over IP with a cruddy video connection that has very slow response time and you cannot reboot the server because the system may not come back up.  Since you'd be 2,000 miles away in Cincinnati, OH, you would have to call remote hands to reboot the computer for you if you happen to shut it down.  And the response time of the datacenter technician is not as fast as you'd be praying it was because the customer is very demanding!   That is a bit harder...   just only a bit.

give it a shot studt your cars wiring diagrams as well as the alarms. understand what each wire does and where it goes. and dont forget you have the12volt.com behind you. just ask.
