Can anyone tell me if it is at all possible to install the stock tape deck and CD player from a '98 Camry into an '89 4 Runner? Do you need to have the external amplifier from the Camry or will it work without it? Also, if it won't work without the amplifier, is it at all possible the install the amplifier into the 4 Runner. Or is this just more trouble than it's worth? I gave the stereo to a guy at work because we thought it would be cheaper than buying a new stereo. We tried to install it today without much luck. The guy has the crutchfield harness adapters from the old aftermarket stereo, so we were trying to splice the Camry radio plug with the crutchfield harnesses. I finally found a wiring diagram to tell me which wires are which on the Camry plug. We're going to see if we can get it powerd tomorrow now that we know what the wires are. My biggest concern is the amplifier. All I need to know is if this is doable or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I feel bad because the guy already bought me a 12 pack as payment and then we couldn't get the stereo to work. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

You'll need the amplifier to get it working, or you could wire up an aftermarket one.

My ex once told me I have a perfect face for radio.

If that radio came from a camry with the JBL system then yes you would need the amp. If it didn't, and the truck doesn't have an amp, then it should work. The wiring harness is the same so no need to cut any wires.
