8-volt pre-outs on an older amp?

I have an older Rockford Fosgate amp, before they sucked, and I think it's only rated for 2V RCA input.
I'm looking at a headunit that only has 8V pre-outs. Is it possible to turn down the voltage at the headunit so I don't hurt the amp, or is hurting the amp unlikely anyway?

It won't necessarily hurt anything but you will not be able to adjust your gains properly.

It WILL NOT hurt anything. When dealing with this kind of output, though, it becomes absolutely critical that you ubnderstand what you are doing while setting your gains. Start Here... Read it, Know it, Live it.
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

basically your only setting for gain on the amp safely reccomended will be all the way down.  You may have to adjust very slightly depending on how accurate the 8 volt pre out claim is.

Thank you all. Though, there was a hidden hope that the killer-deal headunit wouldn't work, because even though it is a good deal, it's way beyond my budget.
But then again... how else would credit card companies be so profitable?
It's an Eclipse CD8053 for $275, with pre-outs only, no amplifier.

You could try using a RCA level attenuator to reduce the voltage coming from teh head unit. http://peripheralelectronics.com/2002/signal_path.asp

Using high voltage pre-amps with older amplifiers can cause unstable operation in the amp.  I've seen systems where is worked just fine as long as the volume was all the way down, but as soon as it is turned up two or three notches the amp is driven into clipping.  Sort of like an on-off switch with two volume settings: soft and dangerous to the speakers.  The level attentuator suggestion is a good one, although that will damage the excellent SQ from your head unit.  I suggest a new amp.
