So, this time, when I install my new stereo, I want to do all the little things, like using disconnects on the speaker wires instead of just twisting them around the terminals of the speakers. My question is 2 fold.

Are these all standard sizes (usually there is a large and small one on the speaker, what are the sizes I should be looking for)

and where can I get them? I can't seem to find them on the internet, and I don't have a local ratshack or anything like it anymore.

well in most cases they come with the speakers themselves, but any local car audio shop should have them in stock.... and yes they are a standard size.....

The spade connectors are available at most car audio shops and the sizes you can get depend on the size wire you have. Most 4 channel amplifier wire kits have all the necessary interconnects you need.

A pack of each of those should give you what you need. As you can see from this page list there is not one standard size, but the above are the two sizes I seem to reach for most often. Be sure the disconnect fits snug onto the terminal. Instead of trying to make something fit that doesn't, keep buying sizes until you get the right one.

And use a proper crimping tool. These disconnects are made to be solderless. You can find the tool at PartsExpress, too.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

The description actually tells you what gauge wire the spade will fit, so there should be no guess-work.

If the spade seems too loose on the speaker connector, just use your crimper to ever-so-slightly "crimp" the end of the spade that fits onto the speaker terminal. This will narrow the gap and give you a tighter fit.

If you had only added some rosin core solder to that ratshack of a connection, it would be fine. It is a little more convenient to use the spade connectors though.

The ones with the little lock tabs are the best so they don't fall off.

This reminds me of a time when I worked for a 'pro shop' and we were stuck with regular spade connectors for both + and - sized speaker terminals, unless there was a kit. De-strand a customer's 4 awg to fit into an 8awg terminal....not a problem! Just one reason why I only did installations for 2 months! That and my job at 7/11 actually paid more and I didn't need tools.
