Been doing some heavy reading here on the avic units,  anyway, a great forum.  I'm not clear on a few differences on these, so please forgive the probably dumb questions, since I dont have the actual unit yet.  I was about to buy one of the Pioneer D1 nav units for my landcruiser which has plenty of room in the dash,  and now am not sure that is one to buy.  I liked the fact that it had 2 media slots, but I was suprised to read that the D1 won't play a movie dvd?, and none will play them in a moving vehicle (without modding).

Now I'm thinking maybe the N1 is the better choice, but will it show the map scrolling if the nav DVD is not in the unit?

So what is the concensus on the three models, since they are all avail on ebay at around the same cost. Thanks

This is where people should respect and support their local car audio specialist more than they do. Ebay can't help you decide, where a local retailer could. He could show you the differences and help you pick out what is best for your needs.

No problem with that, That would be a really great idea, but no local dealers around here even had one in stock to play with.  I even planned on being lazy and letting them install it.

Where are you located? If I had to choose I would go with the D1. Then again I don't care about video playback. I have had all 3 and thus far the D1 is my favorite.

I'm on the MS gulf coast, a bad place to be this weekend thanks to Hurricane Katrina

I've been looking at the Eclipse units too on their website, think I still like the pioneers better.

You are correct that the D1 cannot play video.  You can always buy a DVD player for it or get the Pioneer DVD changer so that you will be able to control it via the D1.  As long as the N1 is using software CDNV-40MT v1.2 or lower all you have to do it ground the parking brake wire.  Bypassing the N2 is a bit more difficult since you have to add relays or just solder the two pins under the deck.  The latter will void your warranty so beware.  As for map scrolling without the DVD the answer is yes.  I don't know about the D1 but both the N1 and N2 have 64 megs of memory so that you can set a route and eject the disc for CD or DVD playback.  Hope this helps.

I've played with both the N2 and the Eclipse AVN5345 and I have to say that I like the Eclipse better. I haven't messed with a D1, but it looks to be pretty similar to the N2 except in a double DIN chassis.

the D1 is a great unit. the bypass is simple and all you gotta do is get a seperate dvd player and your all set. the D1 also has xm navtraffic, which i don't beleive the N1 has. i personally like the D1, so i guess thats why i recommend that one. i also like the duel cd slot so you can leave the nav disc in all the time. the memory on the N2 and N1 will only work for a couple of blocks unless you program a route in.

i had a question about this. after i program the route, and eject the disk, what if i miss a turn, or take a detour of some kind. can the system recalculate the route without the nav disc in? i dont want to have to reinsert the disc everytime i miss a turn or something D1,N1 or N2? - Last Post -- posted image.

thanks in advance for your help!

The memory navigation stores mapping around your original route and will re-route you back to the original route if you miss a turn or stop somewhere else.  Exactly how far you can go off route depends on the map density of the area (I think they said between 3 and 12 miles off the route.)
