I was diagnosed with this attention deficit disorder crap when I was like 10... i'm 22 now and everyday seems to be a fight with my mind... Maybe this is the wrong area or even the wrong website to be posting this... But everyday is a battle between my mind and my body. I'll explain...

If i'm doing an install on a vehicle... most installers would bring what was necessary with them to the vehicle before the install... such as solder, razor knife, pic tools, pannel tool, soldering iron, tape, ties, sockets, screw driver bits, drill and multi meter ya know things of mobile electronics installation nature...

But with me it seems I think of what I need and grab maybe i'll get 4 out of the 12 or so things... then I find myself going back and fourth from the vehicle more often then not to get that one tool I need. I'll find myself using a tool setting it down on the floor then needing it a bit later and spending minutes looking for that one pannel tool or a screwdriver bit thats right infront of me in plain sight. Its like whatever i'm looking for my brain prevents me from seeing. I've given up on searching for tools several times and went ahead with the install then looked down and that tool was inches from my finger tips.

This whole thing worries me because other people are starting to notice... This issue has invaded other parts of my life even at home where i'll set things like my cell phone, wallet, and keys down and minutes later GONE... when there really sitting in the open... Now its not as bad as it may seem when you read it I mean i'm no david copperfield and nobody is playing jokes. and i'm not going blind... Its just my attention span is seeming to become shorter and shorter. I have very little patience after I try to remove a pannel 4 and 5 times then after that I get irritable. It bugs me even more to see another installer come right over and remove it in a matter of seconds with ease...

Has anyone else had similar attention span issues that have found maybe an over the counter drug or maybe a different way of approaching such confrontataions? Sorry if this isn't the right forum for this I was hoping to find someone with the same interests as me going through the same thing. I didn't wanna have to join a Dr. Phil forum.

I am right there with ya, well not add wise. Everyday I walk out of the house forgetting atleast one thing, be it my keys, laptop, wallet, etc... And I mean everyday.
For installs try and get a tool bag, something small and easy to grab that won't mess the customer's interior up. Through tools like your meter, crimpers, soldering stuff, drill, magnetic dish with screws, 7 8 10 nut drivers, and misc stuff. This will save so much time and eliminate some of the "brain fart" type issues.
No drugs, just thinking ahead. Then again caffeine is an installer's best friend.

Dr. Phil....thats funny. I'm with you and auex, but I got one on yas.....I'm 42. Some days my brain works like Im 62. I used to loose tools on every other job. Got to be a spendy "problem". I did what auex thought of....got a doctor bag, it weighs 40lbs. but I dont leave anything behind anymore. I also had the same problem with not seeing something thats rite in front of me. I developed a system for that too. I am soooo anal about my jobs that I think about it sometimes days in advance. Reading, prepping etc.

Try and stay away from the typical meds that can be givin.....they will change you, but not allways for the good. trust me I know!

Don't be so damn hard on yourself......Good vitamins, and good rest.

I too was once diagnosed with a.d.d. and a.d.h.d. It's a hard thing to really diagnose, there is a lot contrversy behind it all. I often question the reality and scope of it all. It seems to be the popular thing to label people of our generation who are bright but have a hard time finding things they like and excel in. Often those with a.d.d. are very bright in certain areas, however lack the ability to to be equally sucessful in others. Creativity is often an area that shines for us.

I beat my self up (mentally) sometimes for exactly what you describe, BoominRolla. If I should forget a tool or two when working on a car, I hate it. Fortunately there are ways of training your brain to over come this. You must challenge your self every time. Force your self to do better, stay focused!

One drug that is often described is adderall (spelling?). I am vey opposed to prescribing drugs for any a.d.d. or a.d.h.d. type issues. The drug I mentioned is a stimulant and is addicitve. However it is effective, many of my friends have taken it but stopped because of the negative side effects.

BoominRolla., You just typed something out that I have been trying to explain to people for years. I too am diagnosed with ADD and I try not too let it bother me to  much. But, it's hard when you just keep doing stupid shhh over and over and over again. You try to drill it into yourself to remember these things. You don't and you feel that you never will. I still have to write down the registration number of a vehicle just to put it into a computer right next door to the bay. I have no chance of remembering it. I've on countless occasions just given up looking for the sidecutters in someones car. Sometimes the customer has come back and returned them to me. Makes you feel like a fool.

The only things I have been able to do is paint all the handles of my tools BRIGHT Pink! Makes it hard too NOT notice. Sometimes its exceptionally difficult to focus on some of the larger jobs that will involve 3-4 hours work. I often need to walk away and have a smoke. But, I have just given up smoking too!

I haven't found anything over the counter and I have certainly tried but that was in Australia and now I'm in the US and I intend to quiz a few doctors because there is no way in hell I'm going onto the prescription gear. nuh uh, no way Jose.

If I happen to find anything that works, I will be sure to let you know. As I know it's not so much difficult as it is frustrating! Would like if you too could share any success with me to please!

I think people like us though should give ourselves a pat on the back for getting as far as we could! Matt Groenig, name ring a bell? Well, he has ADHD. Sylvester Stallone, he has ADD too! Dr. Green a leading specialist on ADD....yup, he has it too!

Well, thanks for letting me know I'm not the only installer out there who has trouble keeping track of tools in the customers cars!

Ray.
