fat mat vs. dynamat?

ok i kno dynamat is the most popular brand but what about fat mat? i heard that its better but ive never used it? any suggestions?jl audio..nuff said

Try this: Sound Deadener Showdown Dynamat X is twice as thick, uses a butyl adhesive instead of asphalt, Has a much higher heat tolerance. Has a thicker aluminum foil constraining layer. The only reason to think FatMat is better is because FatMat says it is. Dynamat Xtreme is better in every way. That said, there are some products that are better than Dynamat and several very good products that are much less expensive.Don Sambrook

now hold on i havent read the hole thing yet i gust had to say this. howabout   not useing the pell and seal thing. what me and my dad did on his 63 jag e-type is use contact cument the kind that you get at a lumber yard or lowes its used for putingin mica counter tops and it works great to get the stuff on there. insted of useing the weak adheseve on the mat, it worked great and once you put that stuff on there i DOS NOT COME OFF iv tryed. and we used fat-mat. i thank you for taking the time to do this it is very interesting and helpful please tell me what you think of useing the contact cumeint as a adhesive. im going to go outside and se if i can peal it up. i gust tryed and it did come up but after a little strugle but the pice i puled up was the corner that came to a triangle so that made it alot esiar to pull up. we did not prep the surface as you did and propibly sould have sanded it alittle to get it to stick beater. if the only problem was the adheseen in some of those cases then im sure that there are some other kinds of heat resistent adheasive that would work well. ill do some experimenting and post my results on this forum. tell me what you think of the contact cument thing though. good job and please stay active on this forum we could use some good expirementers on hear. Adhesive failure is one issue with asphalt mats. MFM actually sells a spray adhesive to use with Peel & Seal. There are other factors to consider. In a hot climate, the asphalt can melt over time - actually turn to liquid and soak into places you don't want it. Then there's the smell. Finally, maximum viscoelastic effect occurs in a fairly narrow viscosity range. asphalt becomes harder at a higher temperature and softer at a lower temperature than butyl, so butyl will work better over a wider range of temperatures. That said, while butyl is better than asphalt, asphalt will work better than nothing. My main point in doing this was to debunk the claims that, for example, FatMat is "Better than Dynamat Xtreme".Don Sambrook

tell me what you think of this. we also used a exersise mat its like rubber or something you can get it at lowes and its pritty thick. it seams to work gust fine i dont no how it would do in the place of sound deadener. but it is good and absorbeint. im gust trying to find something that isent used for sound deadening but will work gust as good as the high prised stuff like dinamat extream. like some sourt of plastic or gust a thick sheet of the stuff that extream is made out of. and would rubber work good in the place of the sound deadening, the stuff i have is very absorbent. there has to be something out there that works gust as good and is cheap. It depends what you are trying to do. Products like Dynamat reduce vibration. Foam absorbs sound. Usually you want both. I tried to do exactly what you ae doing, find something cheaper. I lookes at roofing supplies, just about anything I could think of. I couldn't find anything as good, so I wanted to look at Dynamat competitors to see how they stacked up. I suggest that the cheapest good alternative is RAAMmat. Won't have a problem there. Second Skin Damplifier is much less expensive than Dyna X and better too, so there are plenty of options.Don Sambrook
