I believe the science behind the polyfil is this: The speed of the sound waves is decreased when polyfil is added. Therefore there is less cancellation or standing waves within the enclosure. The time it takes for the sound waves to reflect inside the enclosure is then greater, which is exactly what would happen in a larger box.
