Perhaps you mean with the POSITIVE battery cable disconnected?  confused check resistance of ground - Page 2 - Last Post -- posted image.

To read the actual ground of your system you need to read resistance all the way  to the alternator case not just to the battery terminal.  You could do what I do and take a SECOND continuity reading from battery negative to the alternator case (after measuring return resistance to the battery negative.)  If this is more than .5 ohm or so you have a bad engine ground strap or improper alternator mounting.
