Okay everyone I got great feedback on how to shave my exterior and was able to do a great job on that with the advice, but this question is more relevant to the forum name..... I have a 96 eclipse and I want to paint the interior, however its vinyl and not plastic how would I go about getting a smooth surface. Is it the same as plastic? just sand till smooth? ANy advice would be appreciated...Thanks

sanding will work, it worked well with my car, even though it took a while,  i didnt do well with the paint, so i plan on buying all new panels if i can find some, try to find a high build primer that works with plastic.  I think SEM makes a good one, ill have to look into it.

i need to finish my interior this summer, running out of time, my fiance says i need to have it  done by our wedding, aug 26. so soon as it warms up, i have a lot of fiberglassing and paint to do.  my friend bought a vaccum pump, should cut down on time.

would u like your chicken original or extra crispy?

is it hard or soft? If its hard you can sand/prime/paint, just paint with something that has a flex additive in it. If its soft u will probly have to start with pulling off the vinyl...after the vinyl is off it depends on if it left a soft backing on the plastic or if it came off completely, if it came off completely u can just sand/prime/paint, if u have the soft backing that u cant get off just wet it out with resin, then sand it down and paint it. Hope that helps a little bit.

you will have to remove the vinyl like you would with fabric door panels and what not...lay up a layer or two of glass...sand and filler,,,sand and prime etc...

there are vinyl paints available but they will only colour the vinyl and not give it a smooth look...you might be able to track down a high build primer that has a lot of "flex" agent in it...but i dont think it ould be a good route to go...

I agree with Cougar, Make sure that you remove the vinyl even if the paint has flex agents the paint hardens up after a while in the heat of a car. If there are any divots in the plastice behind the vinyl just make sure you fill them with, either body filler, or DuraGlass. Then all you have to do is sand smooth and paint....Well that is unless you are going to be changing the shape of the panels. Good luck....
