I have an Alpine Type R swr-1242d. I have it in an off the shelf box not specifically designed for the sub, and it is a sealed box.
I was wondering what would be the best enclosure for this type of sub? The manual states that it can handle sealed, vented or bandpass. Is vented the same as a ported sub?
What type of system would work best wit the type r?

If you follow the directions in your manual for the optimum vented enclosure, and make sure you've got a good quality amp to push it, those subs sound great.

I will be making one soon when i have the time! hah has anyone made the vented enclosure before? Is it the same as a 'ported' sub box. By this I mean should I make a normal box which is ~1.3 cu/ft and then find the right size "pipe" and make a hole and then put it in the box? I have seen some enclosures which are made out of sort of a two chamber type of box. Anyone know of any good guides to make a good ported box? cheers

that box is a bandpass box real hard to make.  i'd stick withe vented design.  you can go to math.com to get help with the area and volume formulas. and it's very much worth it to build the right vented box you'll get a big differance in output

Minimum 25mm MDF with type R subs I've seen them flex even 18mm before.

Learn all you can about box-building and vented enclosures before you build it.  Look at the WinISD sticky above;  in it are links to some calculators and I recommend you use the program, too.
Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

A vent is just that, a wooden vent made into the side of the box. A port is a piece of pipe stuck inside the box. Just look around this site, there's lots of info on box building.
