what's up all? i have a customer coming in in a few days wanting to get a viper 160 installed. of all the many r/s's i've done, oddly enough, i've never had to do one on a taurus. one of my installers did a '01 a while back and said a 555f wouldn't work. he said he had to use a 556u. my problem with that is the customer doesn't want to loose a key or buy another. i've used the 555f on late model f-150's with no problems. directechs recommends a 1100f. that's basicaly a self learning 555f, right. any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

A 555F will work, but a better solution would be a 555S. Getting the pellet situated on the 555F is always an issue, and if it ever shifts around they tend to stop working. The 555S gives the best of both worlds, a pickup ring like a 556U and a code learning brain like a 555F.

one more question. you know how sometimes the ring on the 556u isn't used, could that be used on a 555f in place of the capsule? i've never tried it but always wondered if it could be done.

anyone have an opinion? the 556u transpoder ring only has two wires with the thirs BLACK/ white not used. could this be attached to the wiring in place of the capsule on the 555f? seems like thats all the 555s is but i have to order that one.

also, do you have to wake the GEM like you do on the f-150's?

No, i won't work. The capsule on the 555F is what actually learns the value of the key and stores it permanently. Once a 555F learns a code it's done and can't re-learn another-ever. The other part of the 555F is nothing more than a relay to turn it on. The 555S actually sends a key value to the brain in the learn mode, then sends that same signal out when used. It really isn't anything more than a Patskey chip biult into a box with a relay to turn it on and send a signal out. We use 555S modules on most Fords and they seem to work very well.

ah.......i see. thanks for the info. i've always wondered about that, but didn't actually know how they worked. i knew the bottom part was a relay but think about the capsule storing the code. thanks.

one more thing, do you have to wake the GEM like in f-150's? i'm trying to know what i'm up against before it comes in. thanks again.

I never have. These cars are super simple, practically every wire is in the kick panel or column wires. The hardest part is getting thru the firewall, a bit of a pain....
