voltage reduction for a meter

i need to reduce 12v to 5v for a meter install in my car. can i do this via a resistor?

you can get it down to 6v using a voltage divider network. If the purpose of this is to turn on a ford factory amp without popping 6v will still work so u can try it.
To do this simply take your source wire, put a resistor in it(any size) then put a second resistor of the same size in series then ground the other end. Then run a wire out of in between the 2 resistors. This wire from in between the 2 resistors will be half the voltage of your source wire.
