Could I use my oscope on the hu preouts w/ a test tone to tell me when the signals being clipped?

That would be correct.  Inner pin to outer shield.  Sometimes it helps to strip an old RCA cable so you have bare leads to clip probes to rather than trying to hook to a connector.

Or, you can get yourself one of these... I keep a pair in my toolbox for testing, all the time. 6 dollars, and you don't have to cut or strip any wires at all oscope for hu preouts? - Last Post -- posted image.
