Hi All,

What is the difference in watts, PMPO and RMS. I've seen amps that make 1000w PMPO, but 400w RMS. Now thats easy to grasp. But then again i've seen a different amp, doing 2400w PMPO, but does 125x4w RMS, which should be like 500w rms.

Now what gets me is look at the huge difference in pmpo, but the small difference in rms.

Could some please shed some light here.

PMPO is the max wattage of an amp on brief period of the time, it's a BS marketing power rating. RMS = Root Mean Square that's the actual power rating of the Amp, you should always look at the RMS rating of an Amp, not the PMPO or Max.

...and what it actually stands for is "Peak Millisecond Power Output", and all manufacturers are free to define their PMPO any way they'd like, as in "@ what frequency", "@ what distortion", "@ what load", "@ what power supply voltage", "how many channels driven", etc. There are no "honesty requirements" in PMPO claims. This is why you'll see so much disparity in PMPOs and their corresponding RMS values.

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

I have seen amps that say 1000w max and you read further to find that was at 24 volts. later in the one sheet instruction/owners manual it tells you that the amp maker is not responsible for any damage if the amp is used in a non 12volt application. I refer to the max rating as WLS for When Lightning Strikes.

It actualy makes you wonder what realy is a good amp?. I've looked at couple amps and its like major brands. but the true power ratings are like 75w rms x 4. 100w rms x 4. etc etc. but the claim huge powers like 1800w pmpo etc.
