I'm betting that you overpowered the hi-pass crossover cap at some time or another. If you opened them up, did you notice ANY kind of crystaline stuff, on ANY cap, or were any of the cans swollen at all? If so, that'd indicate a FOR SURE overpower situation, AND it would explain why the mid/woofer section still works.
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

hmmmm interesting....alright i'll have to see whats going on here then. i'll open them up soon and check whats going on.   my car is in the body shop right now, getting a restoration done on it.
