hey guys i just picked up these and put them in and they dont sound to great.  they sound weak as compared to the rear factory speakers. i have them hooked up to a 75x4 zapco amp, they are not briged.  when  i turn them up they kinda sound like they are distorting, but not, kindaweird, they just dont sound right.  i tried setting the gain low, 1/4, and i tried setting the gain at 1/2 and 3/4, either way they still have that sound.  i made sure the wires are correct.  im going to try playing with the x/o, i hear that the settings make big diffrences, has anyone installed these?  any pointers on setting the crossovers?  the amp has differnt settings like mono, stereo, would these have any impact on these speakers?  im just a newbie who likes to do things mysef so any thoughts would be great :)

I assume you are using the passive x_overs that were supplied?

I would start with the high pass filter between 80-100 hertz on the amp with no bass boost, and your description of setting the gain clearly indicates you are not familiar with proper gain setting. This procedure is done once and left alone.

I would make sure there are no settings on, on the deck to further confuse the situation.

In addition, more info would be nice like, speaker location, model of radio, amp, etc.

I know you said that you have checked the wiring, but it sounds like you may have one of them wired up backwards. Disconnect one and see if your sound improves.

The shunts in the Alpine passive x-overs are very critical to the overall sound. They use passive time delay and phase shift to correct distance between the drivers and angle between the drivers. Follow the instructions to a "T" and they should sound better. I would also agree with Sarco and check the speaker phasing.
There is no such thing as free installation!

well sarco i tripled checked the wiring and one wire was fliped floped, so i switched it and that sound is gone, so you were right, thanks....buuuut they sill sound really weak....so  hopefully after work tonite im going to play aroud with the sttings on the amp, im thinking that this amp just dose not put out enough juice to power these speakers.

dwarren, your right im not really experiance whn it comes to settng the gain. i have a pioneer  dehp760mp and a zapco z250c4.  i left all the settings on the h/u at 0.  i am using  the x/os that came with the set.  the speakers are mounted in their stock locations, the mids closer by the  lower legs and the tweeter is mounted on top of the door close by where the door handel is.

You need to set a high pass filter either on the deck or on the amp between 80 and 100 hertz, to start with. As far as setting your gain, trun the gain on the amp all the way down, proceed to turn the volume up on the deck to roughly 75% leave it then adjust the gain on the amp up until you hear distortion. If you are not familiar with this process, take your time and listen to familiar music. Once you have found the non-distorting level on the gain, back it down a hair and LEAVE it. You will have some give with the deck being at 75% for music that isn't recorded as well. Just always be conscious of the 75% number on the deck and be careful. Do this process with a well recorded cd, don't use the radio.
