Not no difference, but certainly not a $1000 difference, or even a $100 difference! Now, while I am certainly NOT a tweakist, I can say that there CAN be audible differences in cables, especially RCA cables, AND in a sufficiently high-resolution system. I will ALSO be the first to admit that they are probably the very first components to pass the point of diminshing returns - meaning they will offer less, faster, for more money. Thet do not have to be expensive, but quality construction, as mentioned by tcss will cost a little bit more.
As far as front components... I keep hearing Diamond tossed about as a respectable front stage. Quite a few members here seem to quite like them, and my tastes run along with some of theirs, so I'm thinking there would be a good place to start listening. The new JL component systems (I don't recall the system model number) using the ZR woofer with a VR silk-dome tweeter (which are in my system, and I love them) and newly-designed, purpose-built crossover would be a recommended place to listen as well.
Generally, I build my own, from individual drivers; I've never been a HUGE fan of much in the way of off-the-shelf systems.
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."
