2003 honda civic dx vss location

Hi Everyone!

I am new to this forum, so my apologizes if this question has been in answred before. I tried to search for it, but maybe didn't get the right words to do. So here I go.

I am searching for the location of VSS wire in my car so taht I can tap it the Rostra Cruise control I am putting in. The Rostra manual says for my car it is "Location 5 Fuse/Relay Box 2nd row 13 pin". but it doesn't tell me where to look for this "Fuse/ Relay Box". I am confused between the two boxes, one under hood ( near the battery) and other under steering column ( inside the compartment).

If some one knows about this delima, please reply back. Also would be nice if you can post sketch/photos.

Thanks for replying. But I have this schematic from Rostra and spent afternoon looking for Blue/White wire at said location.  Found Pin#13 on the second row, but it  had 15Amp fuse. I wan't sure if they want me to insert the wire into the fuse to tap, so I used multimeter to see if Pin#13 shows pulses as I drive around. It didn't. So I am back to square one.

If you have picture or sketch of the wire connector ... that would be very helpful. I have rest of the mechanical portion done but this silly VSS wire is bother me. Any help would be appreciated. 

This is the only civic info I can find that does not have the location listed as On the cruise control module.  Since it is a DX and you are installing a cruise I am guessing that you do not have a cruise control module. 

Yes you are right. I have no cruise, hence installing Rostra 250-1223 cruise control kit.

Found PCM hidden behind glove box as you said. Their were three connectors ( one Greya and two white) but no where do I see their labels except number of pins. The White colored connector on top has 31 pins, but pin # 18 is empty. In same way the Grey colored connector on bottom ( below the 24 pin white colored connector) has empty #18 pin.

Darn-it ... it's turning into most furstrating task. I have rest of the car ready to try out this cruise control.

Since I found this forum and other material on the internet greatly beneficial, so I thought it's time for me to share back. I am going to briefly list out major things I notcied durnig my project.

Hardware used : Rostra 250-1223 with 250-3421 stalk ( control switch) for Honda Civic DX 2003.

Major issues:

1. Fuse/Relay box. It's under the steering wheel column towards the passenger side. Unscrew the bolt on bottom to slide it doun the rail. This will help you in installing connectors.

2. VSS wire: From top, in second row, first 13 pin green color connector ( towards the passenger side). Their will be a Blue/White wire with Grey dots.

3. Tach Wire: In the same connector as VSS. Blue color wire next to VSS wire.

4. Brake Cold: BLACK/ White wire in same connector as VSS

5. Brake Hot: From top, in second row, first green color connector ( towards the driver side or on your left side if facing). Their will be a GREEN / WHITE wire. The Rostra manual says it is in same connector as VSS, but I found it this way. Use multimeter to check before you cut anything.

6. Drilling hole into engine compartment: I drilled a hole on passenger side, about 2 inches to left of the rubber grommet used for wires coming into from engine compartment. Note, in my case brake supply line was running 2 inches away, so be careful.

Hello Everyone!

It has been 03 days and so far I have put my newly installed cruise control to approx. 250 miles test. Few of the things, I am having problems with are;

In beginning, when I turn ON the cruise control, it appears to behave erractically. You can feel the car speeding up and than slowing down. It appears the actuator is hunting for the sweet spot or oscilates in more technical terminology. But than finally it dampens down and settles for the set speed. This all takes say about a half mile distance to happen. After that, the cruise control works as good as you expect it to.

This is what I experienced yesterday ( Day02). The cruise control locked !!! even after I had turned it OFF. This could be very dangerous. Ever since that, I had been paying close attention to how it is behaving. My car doesn’t have on dash tachometer, so can’t see the engine revs locked, but has been feeling the sound and vibrations. It seems like for some reason the cruise control cable is getting struck, leaving the throttle open, which leads to engine reving up. I need to re-visit the whole arrangement of whether their should be any slack in the cruise cable or not. I re-call Rostra literature calling for 1/8inch slack in the cable. Which I have maintained. But now I am thinking of beads that come with the kit. I recall somewhere, Rostra telling to put in beads to take up push when the cruise control is not in use. This would happen in-case, when you are using gas pedal and cruise is shut OFF. What do you guys think?

Found answer to my queries in last post. I had connected the cruise cable to throttle using the nose-wire that comes along with the kit. Since I had my own jerry-rigged throttle adaptor made ( I took a 1/16 thick plate and bent it into L shape with hole drilled to insert owver the throttle screw), using the nose-wire as extension to cruise cable was logical and easy at the time. But this caused the retraction of the cruise able when ever I used the gas pedal, because the nose-wire was not flexible enough. So this weekend I replaced the nose wire with the beaded wire and connected cruise cable to throttle adaptor using beaded wire. Now I have eliminated the problems cited above. way to go!!!
