First off.. thank you to everyone so far with the emails and posts helping this newbie with this project.. I really do appreciate it and can't wait to take pics within the week when it's all completed.

Now to my question.. I literally just walked in the door to finishing my fleecing, and doing my resin. Thank god for the respirator!. Ok, so I pulled the fleece really really tight, staple gun'ed it around the edges. Looked awesome.. then I took my resin that I bought from Home Depot.. was the bondo brand I think. I did exactly what it said on the can.. 14 drops of hardener per ounce I think. First I only used 2 oz's.. I realized that it goes quick and fast.. so after I used that up.. I poured 8 oz's.. with 100 or whatever drops per hardner (I did the math and did the exact amount of drops, I just forget right now how much it was). So I covered the entire fleeced area with resin with my 50 cent brush, and literally SOAKED it by the speaker rings, and edges of the box. So, I looked inside the box, and the resin didn't soak through really. But the inside of the fleece is dry, but it's already harding when you tap it because of the outside starting to cure. It's soaked from the outside though. So my question is.. is that normal?.. and if so or not.. should I resin the inside of the box as well or is that pointless being it really can't soak into much material being the outside layer is hard?

Thanks again for everyones help!!.

go ahead and resin the inside also because tht is going to give it extra strength. that is normal by the way.  if you just resin on side your box will only be half as strong as it could be

what!?!?! you want some??

ok sounds good. I'll wait for the outside to dry I guess first.. then i'll do the inside. How long should I wait?.. 2 hrs?..

thats exactly what happened on both my boxes.  i just liberally soaked the entire fleece on the outside.  then when that was almost all dry (about 1 1/2 hours) i soaked the inside as well.  but even if it did soak all the way thru the fleece id still put a layer on the inside just to give it that much more support.

I usually do a 2 to 1 ratio, like 3 layers on the outside, 6 on the inside with more on the inside for internal strength. Its extreamly strong. I jumped up and down on one of my boxes and it was like jumping on solid rock. As for the fleece, soak it, you'll want it to be completely saturated, that will give it the best possible stength.

If you add a little acetone (buy it at homedepot) to the mix up of the resin it will thin it out, allowing it to soak thru the fleece better. But that is normal, you just REALLY REALLY dont want that to happen around the MDF ring. IF it did you gotta fix it or your pretty much screwed. Also, a good thing to do is hold your box upside down, pour resin into the box around the ring, then move the box around to get the resin all up in the spot where the fleece and mdf meet. Hope that helps. post pics when done !
dream it, build it, fiberglass it
