I'm working on a custom front bumper for a Camaro Z-28....i have the pieces cut out that i want and fleece is hot gued on (from behind so i dont have to get resin on the glue) and before i continue i need to ask a few things.

Will fiberglass and/or kitty hair bond to the rubber/plastic material?  Its more of a rubber cause when i was cutting it, it would cobweb and i could gather up the 'cobwebs' and make a rubber ball.  would i be fine with this or should i just test out a little bit.

oh yea...another question.  i need to fix the hood on it...it has a few chips (some are pretty big) out of the front of the hood.  i ground down the area and grooved it both ways.  will a long strand kitty hair be fine to extend these areas of the hood without breaking off when the hood is closed or someone acidentally hits it?

you may have more luck with the hood then the bumper, does this thing have a fiber hood anyways? camerslows usually have fiberglass everything right? the bumper is probably a polyurithane or something like that (i don't know exactly what they call it) i don't think fiberglassing onto this is going to be very favorable, you might have to glass the whole thing a LOT so that it's firm and doesn't bend, cause if you have a bit of fiberglass on the corners or something, if you bump something, those peices are going to crack and fall off, you might have to make a mold of the bumper and just make your own all out of FG,

allright thanks.  yea this camaro has a FG hood, although some do come with steel hoods. I'll try to bond a bid to the bumper and if that doesnt work i'll make a mold...i was hoping i didnt have to go this route as i might as well have started from scratch...oh well, I'll see how it goes.  I'll take a few pics too.

that's good, i'd like to see them, you might just have to glass it all, maybe not make a mold, but do like 5 or so layers, then put some screws (or something that will get into that plastic) then do a few more layers, that way the fg can actually suport it'self and it wont let the bumper move enough to crack the fg, i had to do this with plastics inside my car for the dash (they were to flimsy so if i just bondo'd part of it they would have moved on instalation and cracked it all off) fg sticks to plastic a little, but bondo will pop right off if it moves around

umm actualy you might want to do a little research first because your hod is probably SMC not fiberglass.

most people mistake the 2 but fsmc will have a smooth finish on the unseen back sides, where as fiberglass will show the pattern of the fibers.

OK...thanks guys, I appreciate the help.  I tested out the FG and kitty hair on the bumper and neither sticks, although it sticks better to the paint so i may just rough up the paint a bit rather than removing it totally.  Good idea about the screws, I'm going to pick up a gallon of resin and some mat today so i can cover the bumper, then I'll rivit it all in place.  I was thinking like 2 layers of FG and then rivit and then another layer or 2 of FG followed by some kitty hair and Rage...hows that sound?  or should i skip the kitty hair and just do another layer of FG?

The hood looks like its SMC then as it is smooth on the back.  Either way it should still be fine to FG on right?

I got some pics taken, but didnt get around to getting em on the comp. so I'll be sure to get em up tonight.

grrr...didnt upload the pics yet...too busy getting the motor together.  But i did get a chance to chip away at the FG and kitty hair, and waiting the extra day made a biggere difference than i thought.  I was able to chip the FG away from the exposed part of the bumper with a screwdriver, but where the FG was on the paint i was only scratching the FG...so I think It'll stick pretty decent now, and the parts that I fleeced and glassed yesterday are just as flexible as the rest of the bumper, so i think i might just do 2 layers mat and rivit it and then 1 layer mat, and then finish it up as It doesnt seem like it needs the extra strength and support now (the glass want cured on the inside yesterday...hey, I'm still a newb at this.)

i think i might do a little more then 4 layers, maybe like 6 or 7,,, just incase someone leans on it or taps it with a car, so hopefully it wont crack as easy

need to bond something to bumper -- posted image.

I put 2 layers of mat on with a mixture of resin and short strand kitty hair which worked out quite nice and is really thick.  I blended the whole front piece together (except for the body kit pieces at the bottom cause they connect to the fender, past the bumper and wouldnt work out that great unless i fused the bumper to the car.)  I'm going to abuse the bumper tomorrow to see if it bonded nicely, and if i have any problems at all i will rivit and add more.  I'll let u know how it goes.

Basically the plan is to put a grill (probly billet) in the area that is open..although i still have to add a piece of FG to raise it up (minor) and then where the origional oval turn lights were i'm going to add round ones near the edge to give it a wider stance ( I'm toying with the possibility of adding 2 bulbs per light, one would be white light which will be connected to a switch and the other will be an orange light for the turn signal.  I'm just wondering if u wont see the turn light when the white light is on.)

And the hood scoop is actually for a 2000 cavalier.

looks good, that's a different style then i've seen on a camerslow, but it looks kinda cool.. umm i think the billit idea is pretty good to, i think it would look way too euro if you did a mesh or something, are you going to have it custome made? or do you think something will fit in there, that jdm or whatever bilit company suposedly cuts to fit.. (they are all over truckin mags and stuff like that) as far as the lights,, if you want the yellow to show good you can hook up a relay to runn off the yellow lights (not power them, just kinda get a signal off of them to turn on or off,, if you power the turns with them they might make it blink crazy fast) but use a relay to shut off the white light when the yellow light goes bright for the turn
