I am new to fiberglass work and am in need of some guideance my son and I are in the process of makeing a custom console to go in his 67 camaro project we are making the console out of 1/8 inch hardboard over a light steel skeleton that we fabed up.  we plan to paint it the same color as the car so we need as neer perfect a finish as we can get.

We have very little experience with this kind of work so what we need to know is should we use.

1. epoxy or resin?

2. mat or woven fabric. and what weight for this type project?

3. what types of filler should we consider?

4. what  online supply places do you suggest?

or any tips shortcuts would be greatly appreciated!!

I take it your making the frame work out of that hardboard then fibreglaasing over the top or doing curved areas.  U can use standard fibreglass resin, mat or weave can be used, but the woven stuff tends to give a smother finish.  Filler used would be sumthing like bondo or rage gold extreme, im not in the US so i dont know any of the suppliers over there, some one else will be able to post them for you

Check out TCalYen's build up of a console, very informative and its had over 23,000 views

I would seriously suggest trying someting small first just to learn what your doing. I'm not tryin to be mean at all but trust me; I didn't and it took me alllot longer to learn what i was doing...The resin is all i've used and tis working great. Some say not to use the bondo resin but its what i've been using and its worked good...but ya as the guy above me has said, the matting tends to be alot stronger but if you do something like a "piano finish" on something then i would use the cloth becuase it wants to smooth down a little bit better. Oh and get yourself experianced with bondo if you havent already. I got the matt, cloth and resin from the local napa, autozone, advanced auto...even lowes has some but i've never tried it.

This is the first project I have ever done it is a custom console for a 67 camaro that my son and I are building we are modifying the dash to house an a/c vent and a stereo and sweep down into this console where the vintage air control panel and 4 gauges will be,  we are also going to cut in on each side of it  a chevy bowtie and put white plexi-glass and a light behind it for interior lighting.  we are down to skim caoting with bodyfiller so I thought I would post some pics and see if anyone had suggestions or corrections before we get any further.

It sometimes takes people a while to respond to posts as people have many obligations.. as for your project it's looking pretty good so far. You seem to know your way around a welder pretty well something that isn't used that often in this forum. I'm curious why you chose to weld up all that steel instead of doing the standard mdf and fiberglass but your way works too.
How much of that console is fiberglass I see that the sides are stee

How is the base going to be attached to the vehicle ? I see tabbed slots on the cross member's, but how do you get to them once the peice is on the shifter hump ? Looks good so far. As far as suggestions, I would have rounded off the sharp corner's and straights to make the peice more flowing to the dash lines of a vehicle. Leaving it at 90 degree makes the project stand out too much.

the only steel in the console is the cross braces and two 1inch by 1/8 inch  straps that run the lenght of the console on the sides then there is 1/8th inch masonite attached to them then the to form the sides and the rest is also that same board attached by some small tin brackets that are glassed to the inside corners and that keeps everything in position until I got  the mat glassed in on the back side  for integrety and then we wrapped the entire  thing with glass cloth. It is strong as it can be now.  Last night we skim caoted it with bondo and put it back in for another test fit you can see the pics in the link  they are uploading now .

all of the slotted tabs can be reached easily  two from the front by reaching under the dash  one can be reached by removeing the shift boot and the back can be reached by removing a false bottom in the glove box.  There are allthread studs that come up through the floor (2 on the  bottom of the dash )   that allow you to adjust level and height.

The eges have now been rounded there are no hard 90s
