Okay, I'm not sure what you guys call it here but mounting a sub with the back sticking out of the box. Are there any gains to the sound of the bass or any reason for doing this at all? Can it be done with any sub does it need to be wired diffrent, does this only work on ported boxes? I've just seen it done alot and was wondeing if there was any rhyme or reason to it other then being diffrent any input would be helpful thanks Backward Inverted Insideout -- posted image.
I haven't faild I just figured out 10,000 ways not to do it. (sorry had to steal it)

There is a reason or two subs are inverted: Fashion (primary) and Space (secondary)

Fashion: Subs are omnidirectional, meaning that they make boom in all directions off the cone. Inverting it shows the backside of the sub, which still produces sound, and in the cases of say Audiobahn (and others) they have a cool basket design that many clients/customers like to see.

Space: Increasing the size of a box will allow the sub to create more sound. By flipping it around, the sub no longer takes up space inside the enclosure. It may not be much space gained in the box, but for 1cf sealed boxes, that can increase the size by as much as 20-30% interior space (depending on the sub)

It works on all box types and the only change that you need to do when inverting is to change the polarity of your wires so you do not lose phase. (amp+ to sub- / amp- to sub+)

Good Luck

As outlined above there is no audiable difference in the various ways of mounting the sub.  just make sure you reverse polarity and u will be right

It dosen't matter what kind of box it's in sealed or ported. but if you are into spl comps at all note that you will lose 3db by doing this. My friends and I just tried it in one of my customers cars with a term pro meter and it lost 3.02 db by only inverting the subs (magnets out). I personally didn't hear the difference at all but the micraphone did. I have the subs inverted in my car mainly just to show off the baskets.

the change in box size will alter SPL results, you cant compare the two.  If you used a box that included the subs displacement you would have to use a box with the same volume for the inverted suns to make a direct comparrison between the two

In other words, if you invert it, remember to use some sort of filler (like scraps of wood glued to the walls or something) equal to the displacement of the subs. You should not lose any SPL if yu deide to invert.

BTW..a woofer is basically an air pump.

No matter which way it is mounted, it simply moves air. The only difference should be the internal airspace of the enclosure which of course is determined by the air space that the basket/magnet assembly takes up.

Can't get anymore logical then that.

then... i'm an idiot btw when it comes to this... if the box is sealed, won't you run into a vacuum, stressing the sub's cone? i'd assume then thats the importance of porting to allow the cone to move freely, but at the same time, when the speaker returns to 'neutral position' doesn't it move air back through the porting, at that time creating an echo? lol. i'd love to understand this crap...

The port has nothing to do with which way the speaker mounts. To describe this as simply as possible what the port does is give you a boost in output at a predetermined frequency (this is where tuning comes in). What happens is a resonance is reached at a certain frequency which works in tandom with the sub..at the tuned fq you will notice the sub will actually moves less but the output is greater.

Where the danger can come in is that the power handling is reduced as you play below the tuned fq. A sub sonic filter is designed to help this but most amps do not have one so this is often overlooked and blown subs happen.

As far as airspace is concerned take into account that the basket is just a frame and is mostly empty space so unless the magnet assembly is extremely huge the difference will be nill as far as anything you would notice by ear. If the basket/magnet assembly is huge you might want to make the internal size of the enclosure a tad smaller if inverting.
