I just built 2 ported boxes and I wanted to know what kind of carpet is used to cover them with and where I could find it.

you can go to any local upholstry (don't know how to spell that) shop.  I like to use needle punch carpet to cover a box.  It streches real easy and sticks real good with spray glue.  Kind of a pain to cut, you have to a good sharp blade.

Could it just be interior/exterior carpet? The stuff they use on pool decks.

it might be.  i know when that carpet gets wet it doesn't really effect it to much so it could be interior/exterior carpet.

It would kinda make sense though. I mean the boxes are made out of MDF which cant get wet or any moisture period. So that would explane the purpose of the interior/exterior carpet to protect the box in the case that the trunk is opened when its raining to protect the box. I guess you could get that stuff at home depot. Any idea what kind of glue is used?

From my experiences the carpet is not what you want. I went to the Depot and got some for my first box I built and it was ridiculously annoying to try and carpet. The carpet has zero flex and is stiff as a cardboard so doing corners is amazingly doodiety.
On my second box we went down to Joann's Fabrics and purchased some different stuff(the name escapes me atm) but it was more of a microfleece type of stuff which worked waaay better. You need something with a little bit of stretch to it, and the glue we found to work the best is 3m spray adhesive which we used for both boxes. DONT GET THE CHEAP GLUE, we got some cheaper brand at Wal-mart one time and it was horrid and we ended up having to redo the box. carpet for a box built -- posted image.
Just my 2 cents

Well what is the purpose of the carpet? Is it for looks or is it to help prevent the box from getting wet?

looks and to cover up all your mistakes is my best guess. Really you think a few drops of rain will penetrate fleece like material and ruin your mdf? Probably not. In my opinion the real protection for your box is your car.
