I have an alpine pdx-4.100 amp powering all brand new component speakers.  When I turn up the volume very loud it shuts off and will not play again until I turn it off and on again.  It will play again immediately and continue to as long as I turn the volume down.  The gain is set to just more than 1/2 way up,  I have a .03 voltage difference between my amp's power and ground and my battery terminals.  I'm using a computer as the input to amp.  Everything is stock as far as the big 3, battery, and alternator, I didn't really see it necessary to upgrade these using just one 100x4 amp, but maybe I was wrong, what could be the problem? I know this amp is touchy, and protects itself, and I'm using a computer, which complicates things.  Could it be the battery, or maybe the wire guage isn't big enough? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

How does it work if you don't use the PC as the source?

This is getting my first thought vote for being the issue!

Hmmm, Don't know, don't have a head unit>  I have a 2008 Lancer and figured if i wanted aftermarket I would have to go  completely custom so, why not a computer?  But when I first tested the amp, I used a pocket pc to play the music and I didn't have any problems (I couldn't believe how good it sounded), except if i paused a song I would get the same shut off problem I have now, but like I said this was when I first installed the amp just to see how it sounded, so much has been changed/added since then.  But if that is the case how would the audio input cause the amp to shut off?, and is there a way to fix this?

are you running at the right Ohms? Are you overloading your Amp?

#1 it could be a voltage problem. check to make sure your ground is secure, use at least 8/4 gauge power cable and make sure your battery/alt  aren't weak.    if it is a battery/alt  issue it will obious since all your interior lights will flicker/dim.

#2 could be your woofers are wired incorrectly as some one said

#3 could be your amp has something wrong with.

i myself would go with #3 but, the others could very well be to blame as well.

life is a comedy to think, a tragedy to feel

What is your voltage at the amp at moderate volume?
What speakers are you running and how many per channel?
Hot hot is the amp getting?
Voltage, Impedance, or Heat. Chances are it's one of them.

Assuming the amp is not defective: either the impedance load on the amp is too low, the gain is too high, or system voltage is dropping too low.  Or, you have an installation issue like a speaker that is shorting out.

Yep, the problem was a short on one of my speakers.  It read .4ohms.  Don't know where the short was though, I took the speaker out and tested it and it was fine, put it back in and it's been working perfectly ever since.  Thanks for the advice.
