Yes, it means something is broken or the VC has come loose.  Stop using it.  Get it checked out by a good shop.

If you have a 1 channel amplifier or a 2 channel amp that is bridged on the woofers, then yes the woofer is blown.  If you have a 2 channel amp and the woofers wired one to each channel, chances are the woofer is blown, but just to eliminate the amp from the equation, connect the left woofer to the right channel of the amp and vice-versa.  If the same woofer makes the noise, it is blown.  If the noise moves to the other speaker, there is an unlikely problem with your amp or source.

thanks...it was blown by way of the voice coils so i had to by 2 new subs.  i had 2 volfenhag's...for a cheap subwoofer they really pounded it out for me for over 3yrs.  hate to see it go, but i still have one left.  are the chances good that sooner than later it will blow too?

If you beat too hard on anything for too long yea. Everything has a breaking point.

And some things reach their breaking point much earlier than others.  Especially German Concepts that are manufactured in Korea.

they beat good for me for 3 yrs so i'm not complaining...just switched to Kicker CVR's...there's definitely a difference in sound, for the better.  i already had Kicker 5x7's in the doors as well.  i guess i will resort to moderately bassing them out so they wont blow.  my next task is to amplify my door speakers.  will this allow the words come out better?  right now, the rear speakers are getting drowned by the bass.  should i proceed with getting them amp'd?

advice from all would be great!!!!

WHAT do you mean by that??

Forget about your rear speakers, concentrate on the ones you actually listen to, in the front.
