Hi guys.
First off...my car is a 2000 firebird. SONY cdx-GT310. Intermittently my amp remote wire will not have power. back of the stereo gets pretty hot. last time I had problem I pulled the head unit out and actually burnt my wrist on the rear heat sink of the unit...ouch. at that point I removed it and reconnected my MONSOON head unit which worked...but has no amp turn on connected. Couldn't fit it because of the aftermarket mount I have installed. So at the time I didn't want to change all the stuff back so I just replaced my sony unit back into the hole..and the amp powered up just fine. Has worked fine for a week... Today I find the same thing happened again when I was outside doing some other stuff to the car and wanted to listen to music...the amp again wouldn't turn on....I removed unit again and find only 2.3 volts at the amp remote wire....a few times I heard the base kick in but they worked for merely 2 seconds then off again.
Any ideas whatsoever could be the cause of this?
any help much appreciated.
thanks

what ohm level are you speakers at? Do you still have the factory monsoon speakers hooked up? Any aftermarket equipment other then the sony radio?

sorry yeah
the monsoon speakers were all changed to pioneer before I bought the car. 6's in the door and sail panels...monsoons in the rear Q's but not wired. today it is kicking in and out on my subs but doesn't seem to be powering up my amp...wth. I have an external fan on a relay for cooling but that doesn't come on. I'm gonna pull it tonight and look in the back for any suspicious looking components. just seems like a bad connection inside somewhere. I've tested everything else. can't put it down to overheating either since they still didn't work this morning when it was cool. Should I be getting 12 V on that amp remote wire? I am not.
thanks

dang... not trying to double post. not sure what ohms my speakers are at... this system has been working fine for 6 months. It's all wired up right with rockford fosgate competition wiring. Been kicking ass and suddenly it gives out. It's a sony xm2200 amp I believe...(not self cooling...GRRRR) hence the cooling fan. I'll pull it later and look inside...warranty is up long ago on the HU.

Sounds like it may be more of a radio problem than an amp problem.  Have you tried connecting the remote wire of the amp to the switched wire of the radio?

I just got in from doing that... had the head unit apart and inspected thoroughly...no suspect components found. I have no 12 volt from stereo to turn on amp. Been through all the connected diodes etc and all seem to test fine. I did just wire the amp remote straight to my switched 12v (red) and it powers up fine and plays like normal. I'm worried now about frying my wiring back there with it like that..should I be? I have the sub out option and rear output option. Both use same rca output(there's only 1). should I proceed with only the rear output selected or does it matter. I'm thinking I need a new head unit for peace of mind.. apart from all this...the system plays fine and all other functions are normal.
Again...
Thanks for all the input thus far.

You could have something as simple as a bad solder joint on the amp remote wire where the pin goes through the board.

II did check that...by retouching all the solder in the general area. when re-installed it was just the same. I did the 12v switched wire and all is working fine. not too good around the guts of the stereo itself but all the connections are fine. I'm gonna put up with it this way and get another unit... I've been wanting a red one(from previous led color post)...so I'm looking at a couple right now. prob go for the cdx-gt710 by sony. since i have the steering wheel interface installed and programmed for the sony models. thanks for all the input guys.
