ok i have a jbl gt5-a604 that i just bought 2 days ago. i noticed that the amp runs pretty hot and overheats if it plays at high volumes for like 10-15 minutes. gets warm after like 2. the ground is short and the rcas are high dollar jl. power is 8 gauge jl wire. gains are set accordingly. doesnt clip. i still cant figure out why. only thing i can think of is that the front channel are running 2 ohm infinitys and the back channels are running at 4 ohm. does the differant impedance mess up the amp?

I have a TMA (also made by JL) and it runs super hot too, never shut off but it WILL burn your hand to touch it, so I made a plexiglass shroud and put a couple 3" fans to circulate the air on top of the amp and it has been fine, even in the Arizona heat.

i had another jbl amp before, the cs60.4 and it did the same thing. was yours running same or differant ohm loads? yea mine finnally shut off one time after like 25 minutes. only actually shut off once but i guess i need to buy some fans and put them in there. might just take it back to get a amp that runs cooler.

If you like the jbl gear try the jbl 300.4 thats what i run, never has overheated to the point of shutting off.  i run kappa perferct 5.1 for the front stage and kappa 6*9 for the rears.  Make sure you have to proper voltage under load going to these amps.  voltage drop makes them go into clip much earlier causing them to heat up quickly thus shutting them off.  Happened to me.....  Now wiht that said they will get preety warm but shouldent get so hot they shut off all together.

oh yea i was gonna ask that too. i have stock electrisc system now and the mono amp gets hot if i run it cuz it draws alot of power on my small alternator but witth the subs off and just the 4 channel on, the 4 channel still gets hot. does the 4 channel draw alot of amperage even though theres no bass comin through?

It looks like this amp has 2 20 amp fuses which means it could possibly under certain circustances pull close to 40 amps.  Now with that said it is unlikely it would pull that much evean under full load.  With both amps running you are able to pull 100 amps. (the directed has 2 30 amp fuses) Your alternator should be upgraded if you are still running the stock alt.  Stock alternator is probably putting out 90-100 amps.  Most of which is being used by the car components..  I would recommend a 200 amp alt for your current setup.

so just to get this straight the "non bass amps" like 4 channels and stuff can pull alot of current to? if thats true then thats why it gets hot. i have a 65 amp alternator.... and i know the bashing is comin but im too impatient and like to play my system anyways. but my second battery is going in this weekend for the time being and in about 2 weeks ill have my new alternator. i may get a 180 or 200. with the 2 batterys

Yes 4-channel amps can pull alot of current.  As for the second battery it isent going to do you any good untill you get that new alternator.  The power being drawn for your amplifers has to be replace from somewhere..  That somewhere just happens to be your alternator.

yes i know and have had a ton of people tell me that but in my last suv i had i ran 2 batterys and stock alt and it charged the batterys fine until i got another alt. everyone says you HAVE to have a new alt but if your system is kinda small like mine then 2 batterys are fine as long as you dont slam on it like half an hour full blast at a time. i have got advide from a bunch of shops around the dfw area. but yes i know iot would help getting a new alt and i am eventually but you know they are like 300 or less so i cant just go out and buy one on a dime lol. but i didnt know the 4 channels could pull alot of current, thank you for that advice ragsports.
