seems like a cool idea but i have no idea of how you would do it. except to write a program that controls a wireless IR transmitter that uses the same signals as the remote for the car radio. if you know how to do these things, i think that would be easiest. but, i guess you could also built an analog interface that mimics the faceplate controls and interfaces with the faceplate connector. as far as getting power to the radio, thats easy because computer power supplies put out 12v . the hardest thing you will you will probably need to figure out is how to run the sound from the radio through the PC. my guess would be to get a sound card with an RCA or 3.5mm headphone jack input and run that to the radios RCA output.

i know you can transfer sounds from the comp to a head unit. you can select tracks from the computer and play them through your haed unit. as far as controling the head unit from the pc, u will need a interface program. or maybe a usb, cable from pc to head unit, but you will need some type of program.

the way I would do it would be to make a physical interface to the circuit board of the remote and use a computer program to control some switches that activate individual buttons on the remote. this is just a concept and i have no idea as to what kind of hardware you would need to use to do this

but thats not what hes talking about. he wants to control a normal car stereo with a computer interface. personally i think they are sweet and i will definitely be building one once i save up about 1000 dollars. its really not that hard to do if you know how to match computer parts.

I would say if you're actually in school for something like programming or electrical engineering you might consider using an Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA).  See if your school offers a class pertaining to it.  The FPGA can be programmed using VHDL code, which for a programmer is a very straight forward language.  The FPGA can then be directly connected/soldered to the input at the faceplate plug or directly to the buttons on the faceplate.
