I have a 2004 Pacifica with the standard audio system and too dang many cds! I've seen on eBay a cable that will plug into the 10-pin connector on the back of my factory head unit and allow me to play my mp3 player, utilizing the "aux" option that would otherwise be used to select the satellite radio or cd changer if I had either. However these devices are quite pricey (easily 10x the cost of the materials themselves), and the seller directly states that it may be a month after receiving payment before he ships the thing. Now, this cable terminates in a standard 1/4" stereo trs plug, which to my understanding only includes L and R audio with a common ground. I found this wiring diagram here but I'm not technician enough to determine how to wire the plug. My first thought was to use right and left audio (positions 1 and 6) for R+ and L+ and the common audio as the common R- and L-...the rest of the 10-pin plug positions appear to serve power and control functions for components that I don't have. Am I on the right track?

Have you seen a picture of the device? is there a small box anywhere on it? I really have no idea about your particular deck, but most of these decks will not switch to the CD/Satellite Radio inputs unless there is a device connected to the radio. The 2 wires labeled PCI bus leads me to believe that this is true for your radio. Without the proper protocol to communicate from the device to the radio, the radio will not switch to the input.

Is there an AUX button on the radio? If you press it does it turn off the tuner or the CD?

I have seen pics. One version is here, another here. They both have boxes...I hoped that they allowed iPod control and charging, particularly since on the first the box appears to plug into the 3.5mm female plug.

Also, my radio has a "mode" button to switch between AM, FM, and CD. If no cd is in the player it simply skips that option.

I see what you're saying about the PCI bus connection. I agree that somehow that probably tells the radio that something is connected and available, with the audio signals themselves being conventional. Given that all these adapters are completely self-contained and use only the 10 available pins ( this one only uses 8) I'm making a somewhat uneducated guess that if the box sends any signal to the PCI it's just completing a circuit from one of the other signal wires (IGN RUN/ACC SIG, perhaps?) to tell the radio that something is attached. If so, similar could be accomplished with a small board and some resistors.

So what are the purpose of those converter boxes you can buy? Solely to allow the stereo to switch over to that input? If I simply by the plug harness/adapter piece, will my stereo allow me to switch to that input?

The box on the adapters contain the microprocessor that allows communication with the radio. Without this communication, the radio will not switch to that input.

You will have to plug the adapter into the radio and disconnect the main harness of the radio. WHen the harness is reconnected to the radio, the radio will attempt to communicate with the CD changer, (The adapter in your case), once it sees the adapter, then yes it will now switch to that input
