08 fj head unit in 87 4runner

I have installed the radio from my wifes o8 fj, non fjammer, into my 87 4runner.I have been trying to utilize the aux plug for the 4runner, i purchased a 3.5mm panel jack, and the male counter part for the mp3 player, i also scavanged the plug that goes the the back of radio and wired it all up.
but the unit will not let me select aux?????? any ideas?

There is a switch in some aux jacks.  If it does not see a cable plugged into it, it will not let it switch to that source.  Were there more than 3 wires on the plug that was on the FJ?
