Hey guys, I wanted to know if any of you know whats the loudest speaker out there? Not subs just plain old speakers. I would love to take my subs off and put some speakers to the amp and see what it sounds like. Im jsut doing it for sh*ts and giggles. Is there such thing as a 1200watt speaker?

I guess that guy has subs.

not something you could put on a car - but sandia or lawerence livermore national labs built some speakers to use as weapons. They can literally kill you and are as big as buildings.

Yes, yes there is such a thing as a driver with that kind of power handling. The 6 inch Morels in my car have a specified continuous power of 120 watts RMS, with input pulse power of 1000WRMS, for 1000ms. This does not a louder speaker make, though. To determine how loud a speaker will get, you need to know the reference efficiency of the driver. The 6 inch that I am referring to has an Re of 84dB, which means that even with a 1000 watt pulse, it will still only make 114dB, and this is only for one second. There are many horn loaded (NOT compression drivers) that start out with a 106 to 110 dB efficiency, when loaded in their horn, but with a 20 to 25 watt power handling capacity, which means they COULD make between 118 to 124 dBs. So, you question is loaded, my friend. Power handling does not make a speaker louder. It is the construction of the speaker.
Good call, though, joe_b. Sandia and LLL has been testing sound-powered weapons for years, and they do have a driver array that is capable of (I've heard - I have no concrete proof of this) 190dB, loud enough to liquefy your eyeballs! Pretty nasty, eh? I wanna play, too! For reference, the Space Shuttle, when taking off is approximately 160dB 120 yards from the pad! Also, because it is an array, they can "steer" the output, so you don't have to be looking straight at it to get nailed! I have some capacitors from some of those very experiments - one is 50kV @ 7uF, and one is 20kV @ 14uF and they average about 175 pounds each! Freaking HUGE... I use them to shrink quarters! Fun times for all!
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

It depends on the frequency. Simple as that.
