I'm looking to put a little bass in my 1990 Chevy 1500 Regular Cab Pickup.  I've been reading topics on this site about subs, and most people are suggesting putting multiple subs that are a minimum of 10 inches powered by huge amounts of power in their cars.  I'm thinking going that route would be too much for me.  I have a Clarion DXZ435 head unit, and 4 pioneer 4" speakers.  The highs and mids sound perfectly fine for what I want, but there is a big lack of bass.  I was thinking 1 8" sub, maybe an MTX Thunder4500, or a Kicker Comp C8, both with 30-100 watts rms, and getting a 100 watt amp to power it.  Space is limited, as I want it to go behind the bench seat without having to move the seat up too far (I'm a pretty big guy).  What do you guys think?  Should I sacrafice some more space and get a 10" sub with a bigger amp?  My musical tastes are all over the board, and constantly changing.  Thanks for the help.

If your not already a bass freak, , then you obviously werent to interested in it much in the first place, , ,so possibly a good choice for you would to be a really good 8" sub with 100 or so watts rms, , ,or a smaller 10" sub with 100-150rms.    Both are enough to shake your mirrors and give you a back massage, , but mostly will fill in for what those 4" speakers can't do.  Anything more would be too much since your not asking for ground shaking bass.

Give us a price range and we can help you out.

The mounting depth of the two speakers is about the same. The 10" sub has a larger surface area to move more air. Choose a 10" sub that works in a small sealed box and build the box to fit behind the seat. Amplify this sub with no more than 20w rms of power. If you do not have a dedicated sub preout with level control on the cd player, choose an amplifier that has this as an option. This is a separate and indipendent volume control strictly for the sub. Too much bass, turn the bass volume down, not enough, turn it up. This is done on the separate control knob, not on the bass setting on the cd player which affects all speakers in the system (bad thing).

Thanks Alpine.  I'm looking to spend around $300 for the sub, amp, box, and all wiring.  If it costs a little more, I'm sure I can swing it.  Would the MTX or Kicker be ok subs for this application?   I found them both at crutchfield's website.  Also, does anyone know of anywhere in or around Portland, OR where I could hear one or both of these subs in person?  I tried Best Buy, but they didn't seem to know what they were talking about (guy tried to sell me 2 12" Kicker Solobarics and an amp that could have powered a small country).

Don't go to the big box butcher, go to the guy who is a specialty retailer and knows wtf he is talking about. Spend your $ with this guy and not some online nobody.

Thanks Rob.  Only 20 watts?  That even seems low for me.  Don't get me wrong, I do want to be able to feel the sub, and get a decent amount of volume out of it.  I just don't want to be one of those guys that you can hear coming 10 blocks away.

haha, i was wondering about that 20 rms.   Anyways, , definately check out your local shops, you may spend $20 more, ,but you will get that greeting everytime you come back, you will get the bend over backwards service that you just can't get over the phone.    You can definately find a system in the $300 range, , a box should run you $60-$80, sub $75-$120, and amp $150 and up  , ,  expect maybe $400 all said and done.  Tell them your situation like you told us, , make it clear you want something to fill in and not take much room in the 10" size.   They  should show you box sizes, , then you decide the sub based on the box size you chose, , and the amp will be decided last for what will best suit the sub.

They will sell you an amp install kit, , probably $40, and if your knoledgable enough you can install it yourself with our help, , or you can get it done, with a warranty for a small service price, , probably around $60.

Thanks again Alpine.  All this info has been very helpfull.  Now I just need to find where I can go around here to get good service, and listen to a few different setups.  I've done a few systems before, but space was never an issue.  I'll post when I get the stuff and install it.
