I've started shopping around for a new HU and I was wondering what exactly the differance between one that is 2 volt, and one that is 3,4 or 5 volt?  Is this something I should take into importance when shopping for a deck?

I assume you're talking about the line level output carrier voltage?  In general, higher voltages enable longer cable runs with less chance for noise interference, and enable you to use lower gain settings on your amps (generally resulting in cleaner overall output from the amp.)  Some amplifiers cannot handle inputs greater than 2 volts, others (most recent amps) easily go up to 4 volts.  Some can handle 12 volt inputs.  Be sure you are not feeding a signal that is too hot for your amp.  Higher voltage output is NOT by itself an indication of quality as some would have you believe.

yeah, more voltage is better to the point as dyohn stated, , but in some cases the manufactures are lieing , or mis leading you.   Anyone can make a deck output 5 volts, , but to do it distortion free is the key.   A 5 volt jvc isn't going to compare to a 4 volt eclipse, there a big quality difference.

Most companies any volt cd player will not compare to the entry level 2.7 volt Eclipse. The biggest lie in our neck of the woods is that Alpine makes the Eclipse pre-amp and this means that the Eclipse 8 volt is only 4 volts because it is the largest that Alpine has....right....smoke another one buddy......here let me get that forya, thanks for coming out......Output voltage is not all that it is cracked up to be, don't let it dictate what cd player to buy based on a seemingly "superior" spec.

Thanks guys, for clearing that up for me. Im looking to spend no more then $250 for my new HU. I want quality, but I also want one with a fancy display, with the visualizations, and it has to play MP3s. There is a Eclipse HU at the car audio shop that ive boughten things from before for $200. But its ugly, and doesnt have a lot of fancy stuff. Im replacing my crappy wal mart HU (which I hate more by the day), so anything will be a upgrade. Can anyone steer me in the dirction of a good HU? I dont want to end up buying another one a year down the road.

If you buy the light show, you will end up buying another cd player next year. A light show or built in eq does not make it sound good. There is a monster huge godzilla size difference in sound between a light show and an Eclipse. Make a deal with the local dealer, install the light show and then take it out and listen to Mr. Ugly. My bet is that Mr. Ugly will be there to stay. Eclipse also is going to give you a 3 year warranty, much better than the light shows 1 year, + it they will give you a new cd player if it is stolen in the first year (must be bought and installed from an authorized dealer). Give Mr. Ugly the chance he deserves. He doesn't need fancy stuff to sound good.

I love Mr. Ugly, he's just swell. As people said before, output volltage is total BS half the time. If you test a panasonic deck's sub out that is suposedly 5 volts, and you test it using the frequencies that a sub woofer amp can use (125 hz and down) it will actually put out less than 2 volts, what a bargin. I have a test report around here somewhere thats a 2 1/2 years old now and it has a test report on an alpine deck. The deck had a retail of about 800 bucks (cant remember the model number right now) but it had high volt preouts and when tested the preouts actually put out 3.6 volts and the thd was well and above 10%. Ill see if I can find it tonight because it was in a magazine that always had very telling reviews and if they didnt like sometyhing they would say so.

Will the eclipse give me better sound for my entire system, subs and everything??  Becasue I will only have my 3 1/2" speakers hooked directly to it.
